Natural Apple Cinnamon Oats Doggy Treats

"Here's an easy, safe, natural and healthy treat that dogs drool over! Makes their breath smelling fresh too-- what more can a pawrent ask for? I found this recipe somewhere on the web and altered it a bit to make it more natural and healthier for our furry friends. The original recipe called for 5 cups of flour and regular powdered milk. I instead used non-fat powdered milk and used just 2 3/4 Unbleached flour and 2 1/2 cups oat flour. You can make your own oat flour by grinding oatmeal using a food processor or even a coffee grinder would do. I or should I say, my dog Coco gave them as gifts to her doggy friends this Christmas. They were well received and consumed in no time... by the dogs and their humans too! We have lots of doggy friends and this recipe yields a lot so this was VERY economical."

directions

  • Pre-heat oven for 15minutes- set at 350 degrees F.
  • Mix all ingredients together until the dough is less sticky enough to be kneaded with your hands.
  • Knead for approximately 7 minutes.
  • Roll out dough and cut into small fun shapes. You can place them n cookie sheet close together as they don't spread. (If the dough is a bit hard to manage, wrap it in saran wrap and let it sit in the freezer for approximately 20 minutes).
  • Bake for 25 minutes or until brown. (My dog loves the crunch so I bake mine a little longer).
  • Let it cool and serve with TLC.

  1. Trinket, our 1 year old Malchi, loves these. (2)

  2. I made these with my toddler to give as Christmas gifts to our dog friends. The recipe was fairly easy to follow and there were plenty of steps where he could "help." I simplified things by using a food processor, first grinding the oatmeal to set aside, then shredding the apple (I kept the peel on and it added nice color to the treats), then switching to a dough blade to mix everything together. The dough was a little sticky, but I kneaded in a little extra flour and then it was very easy to work with. These smelled so good baking, my son was upset when I wouldn't let him eat one!

I'm an Associate Director of Catering for a hotel in NYC... I book and plan banquet events. I have been in the food and beverage industry for 17 years, mostly in deluxe hotels so I'm lucky to have great travel perks. I wish I can find more time to cook. I usually work long hours and mostly eat at work. Because of all the restaurant/banquet food I eat at work, I long for the basic, comfort food that I've been deprived of. I like this site for the variety of recipes and the honest reviews... wish I bumped into it before. Other than my love for food, wine, and travel, I'm also passionate about animals. I have 2 dogs-- a Cocker Spaniel and a Jack Russell mix. Update: From my animal advocacy work, I now know way too much so I recently turned vegetarian...working my way in becoming vegan though dairy is hard to resist sometimes. Any great vegetarian or vegan recipes would be very much appreciated! :-)
