Nanna's Old World Cinnamon Crumb Coffee Cake

"This recipe is from the Penrose Victorian Inn (bed and breakfast) in Haydenville, Massachussettes and is a heritage recipe. It is the best coffee cake I have ever tasted and ever made! I make it for our church breakfasts from time to time and everyone scarfs it right up! Just as fast as the Caramel Rolls! Now that is a feat here in North Dakota! I hope you enjoy this fabulous recipe! Hugs, Jelly :)"

directions

  • Batter: Sift 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt together and set aside. In a separate bowl, beat egg until frothy. Beat in sugar and butter until combined. Add milk, sour cream, and vanilla. Add to flour mixture a little at a time and mix on low until combined. Do not over mix. If the batter is too stiff add a little more milk.
  • Streusel topping: Combine last 4 ingredients (make sure your butter for the streusel is chilled) in a small bowl and mix together, then set aside.
  • Put 1/2 the batter in a 8x8 - inch greased pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle 1/2 streusel over batter. Repeat. Bake at 350 degrees in a preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Topping with chopped nuts is also an option if you like nuts!

Questions & Replies

  1. Can the batter be made the day before?

  1. This sounded like a scrumptious treat, and it didn't disappoint. I gave it 40 minutes in the oven, and it turned out perfectly moist. Also, because I wasn't clever enough to achieve the layering and didn't feel like there was sufficient streusel for two layers, I doubled the streusel recipe. Then I mixed the first batch in with the cake batter and sprinkled the second batch on top. Am I going to bother adjusting the calories and fat in my head? No way!

  2. Totally delicious! It is rich without being heavy, with a delicate texture. As reviewers suggested, I doubled the recipe for a 9x13 pan, which baked for 45 mins. I also increased the streusel to ensure I had a thick ribbon of cinnamon inside. Streusel proportions were perfect at 2 c brown sugar, 1 stick cold butter, 1/2 c flour, and 4 t cinnamon. I made the streusel first, cutting in frozen tablespoons of butter with a pastry cutter. Then I put the streusel in the freezer while I prepped the rest of the cake. This ensures the streusel stays in crumbly bits. It's fabulous--the best cinnamon coffee cake recipe I have found. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Super yummy! I double the recipe and put it in a 9 by 13 pan and it worked great. I had to cook it for about 45 minutes though. This one went right into the recipe box!

  4. Oh . . . my . . . yum!! This is to die for! I'm a cinnamon crumb cake aficionado and this is the best I've ever had. Super rich and super moist. Fair warning, it is not for the calorie-counter. Perfect for when you have friends or family over for a visit. I doubled the recipe and baked in a 13"X9" pan for 40 minutes. Turned out perfectly.

  5. I too had to bake for 45 min, other than that pretty easy and wonderful !! Was a birthday cake for my husband who hates chocolate and not a fan of a lot of sugary icings.. <br/>Thanks for the recipe !!

Tweaks

  1. All I changed was doubled the strusel, and made in a 9x9 pan.I also added a tap of cinnamon to the batter. I'm a cinnamon lover and the struesel it is my favorite part. Haven't tasted it yet.

  2. Pretty yummy recipe! I did make a few changes just to add a bit more nutritional value: 6oz of plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, 3/4 cup of whole wheat flour for 1/2 the white flour, and additional 1/2 tsp cinnamon in cake batter. Still fluffy & delicious! Thanks for the tasty recipe!

Hi! Jelly here! My husband and I live on the Great Plains in the coldest state (feels like it) in the country. My husband and I farm. We grow hard red spring wheat and soy beans. I raise chickens and turkeys too! I have a love for gardening (flowers, veggies, fruits, and berries) and canning, freezing, jelly making, preserving, drying herbs, cooking and baking! These are my passions! I am an avid reader and I like to write and I collect quotes and short poems. And I have a new passion or should I say "Addiction"! ZAAR!!!!! Love you all! We have a golden retriever pup! Our baby! :) Her name is Maisy! 75 pounds!!!!Also, have nine kitties - Sarah, Sebastian, Midnight, Henry, Sam, Star, Garfield, Lilly, and Zeus! Our area is rural and we have a 45 min. drive to the nearest city. It is a long trip there and back! We try to be as green as possible and recycle. We have become very conscientious of our environment. It is our children's future. We carry our our own canvas shopping bags to the market and use a cooler that we keep in the trunk or back of the pickup. No more plastic! We love life on the farm and feel very fortunate to have had so many wonderful experiences in life. Done a lot of traveling and feel satisfied. We make and bottle our own wines. They are delicious! This year's wine is working in the carboys in the basement and should be a great batch. We picked late and they were very sweet and required very little sugar. Got the jelly made and sent some to relatives and friends! It has been a tough season this year....sigh... Soybeans and wheat are harvested and in the bins! Now we hope the market is in our favor! Christmas was quiet as we had a blizzard that immobilized the state for three days...bah humbug...it took us another three days to dig out! Okay. I've had enough snow for the winter!!!! Oy vey.... A little prayer for mankind - Dear God, Bless us all in the New Year...may we have the crops to feed everyone and full bellies, good jobs, roofs over heads and a peaceful world for everyone. This is all I ask for the New Year ahead. Amen.
