I found a delightful little box in my bottom turnaround, it was labeled recipes. I sifted through and separated all the hand written ones: This is my grandmother's recipe for sugar cookies--I wish I remembered eating any she made. I was raised in New Jersey while she was in Michigan, but my dad would always make them.

  1. Mix together thoroughly shortening, sugar and egg.
  2. Stir in milk or cream and flavoring.
  3. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and stir it into the mixture.
  4. Chill dough.
  5. Roll very thin (1/16 in.).
  6. Cut into desired shapes.
  7. Place on greased sheet and sprinkle with sugar.
  8. Bake until delicately browned.
  9. Bake at 425°F for 5-7 minutes.

I love sugar cookies and this was a good recipe. The only shortening I had was butter-flavored Crisco. I think the lemon extract would be a great change, but all I had was vanilla. I had to replace the milk or cream with Almond Breeze Original Almond Milk. Made for Please Review My Recipe tag game. I will make again, as these are hard to stop eating! :) Thanks for sharing!

These were very easy to make and the DS's recration group enjoyed them for morning tea. My rolling pin had disappeared so I took small chunks of dough and rolled them to about wallnut size and then flattened them out. Baked for 7 minutes at 165 degree celsius (330 degree F) in a fan forced oven and they were just right. They were about 5 centimetres (2 inches) in diameter and got 36 biscuits (cookies) from the full recipe. Thank you Michelle_My_Belle, made for Recipe Swap #9 - October 2007.

My daughters and I had fun making these cookies. I decided to use the lemon extract for a little different taste. This sort of reminded me of my grandmother's tea cakes as sometimes she would use lemon in them. Easy to make, but they sure didn't last long with my family gobbling them up almost as soon as I got them baked.
