I can't remember how many pounds of apples I went through when trying to get this "perfect." I really like this applesauce served warm alongside baked ham or roast pork.
- 4 large apples (I recommend Fuji or Granny Smith)
- 1⁄2 cup apple cider
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon
- Peel, core, and slice the apples. You may want to taste a piece in order to adjust the later addition of sugar accordingly.
- Place apples, cider, and cinnamon in a saucepan. Cover and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, and cook with cover on for about 20 minutes.
- Remove from heat, add sugar, and stir until sugar dissolves.
- Optional: Before plating, you may want to use a stick blender to puree the cooked apples into a smoother sauce. Take care not to burn yourself when doing this.
One of my favorite apples, Fuji, was used in this recipe, resulting in A GREAT TASTING APPLESAUCE! I did triple the recipe since we really enjoy consuming this kind of homemade sauce with meats, cottage cheese, other fruits, & even added to smoothies! After cooking I took a hand potato masher to the sauce, but leaving it quite chunky, the way we like it! (This is also the kind of apple sauce I like mixing into my cranberry sauce!)
