This is a classic, simple recipe for a good hot winter drink. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz/Syrah, or a blend of the two are suggested.
- 2 cups water
- 1⁄2 cup sugar
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 6 whole cloves
- 1 whole nutmeg
- 2 oranges, thinly sliced
- 1 (750 ml) bottle red wine
- Combine water with sugar and spices in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes.
- Add the orange slices, remove pan from the heat and let sit for 15 minutes. Stir in the wine.
- Reheat gently over low heat, never allowing to boil. Serve hot, in heated glasses.
This was so easy and made the whole house smell delicious! I didn't want to lose any of the wine flavor, so instead of sugar I used a big dollop of honey and it was perfect. A very nice warm-up drink for a cold winter day ;)
