I have lived overseas for over 15 years and Catalina French dressing has not always been available at the local market...So, I used this yummy homemade recipe full of flavor instead!
- 1⁄2 cup sugar, scant
- 1⁄2 tablespoon salt
- 1⁄2 cup ketchup
- 1⁄4 cup vinegar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 clove garlic, peeled
- Combine all ingredients in blender or food processor.
- Blend till smooth.
- Pour into airtight container and refrigerate till ready to use.
Love this stuff. It's much better than french dressing from a bottle. The first time I made it, I had no trouble at all, but this time, for some reason it just would NOT come together and emulsify. The only thing I did differently was use grapeseed oil instead of canola. The dressing wasn't as smooth as it should be, and when I turned off the blender the oil would slowly separate out. I added 1/4 tsp of dry ground mustard, and when I gave it another buzz, the dressing instantly turned smooth and creamy. And it tastes great. (The mustard trick is a general-purpose salad dressing hack!)
I was disappointed in this recipe ... it came out too thick and also seemed too sweet and not tangy like I expected. It was ok, but I might try a different French dressing recipe next time. I halved the recipe so maybe that was the problem. Perhaps I calculated something wrong ...
I am re -reviewing this as I made it with a fresh bottle of ketchup and Worchestershire. 5 stars. It is better than Catalina. Will become a regular in our house. Really much better than Catalina and about 5 minutes to throw together.
