ingredients
- 3⁄4 cup shortening
- 3⁄4 cup sugar
- 1⁄4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄3 cup light molasses
- 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3⁄4 cup chopped nuts
directions
- Cream together shortening, sugar, soda, salt and molasses.
- Blend in flour and nuts.
- Spread in greased 15x16-inch pan.
- Bake at 350°F for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Cut into squares while warm.

i had no molasses so used treacle instead, and brown instead of white sugar to make up for it, and soy margarine instead of shortening. i was suspicious when i made this, because it looked like so little batter for such a large pan. but i am glad i trusted the directions; the 'cookies' are rich, gooey and addictive, and don't burn in my temperamental oven. will definitely make again!
