These bars are so moist and yummy. I have even added chopped apples to the batter... Note: this makes a large amount of bars, but they freeze well...great for potlucks too.

  1. Set oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a 15 x 10-inch jelly roll pan.
  3. In a bowl, cream the 1-1/2 cups sugar with the 1/2 cup butter; beat until fluffy.
  4. Add in the eggs; beat well.
  5. Sift together the cocoa, baking soda, cinnamon and the flour.
  6. Add to the butter mixture, alternately with the applesauce; mix well.
  7. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking pan.
  8. In a small bowl, combine the 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 cup chocolate chips and 1 cup chopped nuts.
  9. Sprinkle over the batter in the pan.
  10. Bake for 30 minutes (do not over bake!) Cut into bars.

YUMMY! Made these early this morning before it got too hot in the kitchen. A real snap to mix up and turned out oh-so moist and delicious. Just the right blend of cinnamon and chocolate. I omitted the nuts to please the kids, and drizzled with a few melted chocolate chips right after I removed from oven. Perfect with some vanilla ice cream!

These were so good! Wow. Made these for a former neighbor who moved to a "work in progress" house with her dh and 5 kids a year ago and they still don't have a working oven. I made a 1.5 sized recipe because my pan was bigger and it worked great (though I did have to cook for 40 minutes). I used whole wheat pastry flour but otherwise left the bars the same. For the topping I used Oklahoma pecans, semi sweet chocolate chunks, and milk chocolate chips. I forgot to add the sugar and just pretty much poured the 3 things in a bowl (using all the nuts & chunks I had and them liberally adding some chips) and then put them on the top. Really yummy bars. A little crumbly but moist and lovely. Just chocolatey enough. Thanks Kitten!
