This is my oldest daughter's favorite birthday cake. It's not too chocolate, but just right.

  1. Sift flour and salt.
  2. Cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs 1 at a time.
  4. Mix cocoa with hot coffee.
  5. Add to creamed mixture.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients.
  7. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to batter; blend well.
  8. Pour into greased and floured layer cake pans.
  9. Bake at 375°F for 30-35 minutes.
