I also having a mennonite background from Manitoba have been eating this soup for years. we dont' put the cinnamon in our and our pinch of pepper is lots. It tastes wonderful and cures all sickness's.

This has to be a prairie soup! Other then using chicken pieces I made as posted. Had no idea that the star anise I had added to my spice collection awhile back could add so much to chicken soup! Would that I could make fine noodles like my grandmother used to make! Great chicken soup! Thank you Leslie and be sure to thank Wayne for sharing this soup recipe that I now have in our family favorites cookbook.

I have a nasty case of bronchitis right now. This soup is so soothing and has really helped. But you can make it just because it tastes great! No bronchitis required to enjoy! I won't go into how soothing this soup is and talk about disgusting things like how it breaks down mucous and clears stuffy noses... a review should entice you to make it not disgust you! :-) And another great point is... it is so simple even a caveman can do it. I know... because my Neanderthal BF Dugan made it for me. And he can't even flip a fried egg without breaking it. Good soup.

I have a Mennonite/Amish background but this recipe is similar to the Mennonite side of the family. (Minnesota/North Dakota/Nebraska/Oregon) This is the recipe my grandma and my mom made. (I have three different chicken noodle soup recipes that I use including this one) It has to be a cinnamon stick, not ground cinnamon. This recipe is the one mom used and she would take the cinnamon stick out before adding the noodles. You don't taste the cinnamon. It just imparts a wonderful flavor to the soup. Mom would put the whole black peppers in a strainer with chain and hang into the pot. I like them in the soup so I can crunch on them while eating the soup!

WOW, what a lovely noodle soup. Little Miss (DD) and I ate this for lunch today and we are going to make it again in the few days. I cut down the serving size to feed both of us and now I wished I made enough for a few lunches. The broth may take a while to make but its worth it, the favour is perfect just the way it is. This is a very good flavored soup. I used pre-cooked chicken, as that was what I had on hand, and tied the anise seed and cinnamon up in a spice bag. I made this for the ZWT 4 Crockpot challenge, so made half a recipe to fit in my small crockpot. I let it cook for 5 hours on high. It was simply delicious. I may add onions and other vegetables another time, or maybe not. It was great just as it was. Thank you, Leslie, for sharing this recipe.

Made great stock. Added chopped onions to mine though. I turned this into chicken noodle soup with veggies. Will make this again.
