directions

  • Place first seven ingredients in large bowl. Mix thoroughly with your hands just until combined. (I wear food prep gloves.) Shape into approximately 30 1-inch balls.
  • Bake in an ungreased oblong pan (13x9x2) in a 400°F oven until light brown, 20-25 minutes. OR: microwave meatballs in an ungreased baking dish, 6 minutes on High, turning once. OR: cook over medium heat in frying pan, turning occasionally, until brown, about 20 minutes.
  • Place cooked meatballs and spaghetti sauce in crock pot. Cook on low for about 2 hours. If you cook longer, stir every hour or so.
  • Place meatballs and sauce in buns/rolls and top with mozzarella cheese.
  • Note, I microwave the meatballs to cook them.
  • (A friend places the raw meatballs & sauce in the crock-pot and cooks them for 8+ hours on low, but I have never tried this.).

  1. Followed directions exactly as stated and it make the most wonderful meatballs and so easy to do. When it was done put meatballs on fresh hoagies with a slice of provelone and bake in the oven for about 6 minutes to get toasty. My kids loved it too. Thank you Marg for posting, I don't know what I would do if nice people like you didn't post these great recipes.

  2. Ok, I must confess that I used my own meatball and sauce recipe for this. What I wanted to review, however, was the idea behind this--I had never thought to put it all together in the crock pot and let the flavors blend. I tried cooking the raw meatballs in the sauce for 8 hours and they were fantastic. I LOVE this idea and meatball subs are now on our monthly rotation. THANK YOU!!

  3. Yum! Followed the recipe exactly with the addition of adding Italian seasoning to the meatballs and sauce. Big hit with my family :) thanks for sharing!

  4. We loved this recipe! I doubled the meatball ingredients and made 72 small meatballs, baked them in the oven for 20 minutes and then put them in the crock pot for about 2 hours with double the sauce. I also added some italian herbs when throwing in the breadcrumbs for some extra flavour. I'm so glad I doubled everything as there are leftovers and then some more for the freezer! They tasted fantastic and I'll definitely be making this again- DH requested them every week! Many thanks for a new favourite!

  5. Made this recipe as written with the exception of using hoagie rolls. Great recipe, moist delicious meatballs. I will definitely make this again and again. Thank you for submitting this!

Tweaks

  1. These meatballs were really bland to me. I did cook my meatballs raw for 8 hours on low, and my sauce turned out very well because of it. I also used hoagie rolls instead of hot dog buns. I'd try making them again with some italian spices and garlic.

  2. I have trouble finding my way around the kitchen and therefore welcome easy recipes. This was by far the easiest meal I ever made. My boyfriend is hard to please but even he enjoyed it. I left out the parm. cheese but added a garlic seasoning and some black pepper. I also replaced the hot dog buns with some panini rolls and removed the top 1/4 leaving a trough-like groove to place the meatballs. I then covered them with grated mozzarella and broiled them in the oven for a few minutes. Excellent dish!! One of my new favorites.

  3. These meatballs were so good! I did them like your friend and put the raw meatballs in the crockpot with the sauce. They cooked while I was at work and they came out fine. I used sub rolls, instead of hot dog buns and used sliced provolone cheese, since that is what I had. I put everything in the roll, put the cheese on top and baked in my toaster oven until the cheese melted. Yummy!

  4. Last week hubby and I had Subway - it's gotten so expensive!! We love meatball subs, but wanted to make our own version... MUCH cheaper and healthier, I like knowing what's going into my food. These were absolutely delicious!! Some of the best meatballs I've ever had! I used onion powder instead of chopped onions... and baked my meatballs in the oven for 20 minutes. Afterwards, transfered them to my crockopot and kept them there for just a bit over 2 hours (and used the warm feature on my crock pot as we were eating). I used hoagie rolls and put shredded mozzarella over the top... then put them in the oven for 5 minutes to melt the cheese and make the rolls a bit crispy. Will definitely make again and again... thanks for the recipe!

Yet another feature change that has made the website less user friendly. It's sad to watch a fantastic site deteriorate over the years. Some of my recipes are on my blog.
