This is my Mom's recipe. She made hundreds of dozens of these over the years for church suppers and family reunions. They were always requested and frequently mailed to relatives who would not make it home for Thanksgiving. They aren't easy to make. But they do make an impression.
She had shared the recipe with my aunts, but I never made them. The "Church Basement Society Ladies" honored her by making them for a reception for our family when she passed away.
Ingredients:

milk
, scalded and cooled
½ cup
butter
, softened
1 teaspoon
salt
½ cup
sugar

eggs
, well beaten
2 (¼ ounce) packages
dry yeast
, dissolved in
1 teaspoon
sugar
, and
¼ cup
lukewarm
water
4 ½ cups
flour
, sifted
(may need more or less depending on humidity)
herbs (optional) or
honey butter

(optional)
Directions:

Scald milk. Cool. Add softened butter and salt.

Dissolve yeast and sugar in lukewarm water.

Add flour. May need a little more or less depending on humidity. Dough should be sticky.

Let rise 2 hrs in warm draft free location (alternately cover and place in refrigerator overnight).

When doubled in size, punch down.

Pour onto floured board.

Divide in half and flatten each piece into a round shape.

If desired spread with additional softened butter (may add herb or honey butter).

Cut into 12 wedge shaped pieces and roll into crescent shape.

Let rise in warm place, free of drafts (about 2 hrs).

Bake 8-10 minute at 400 degrees. Brush with more butter while warm.
