Marcia's Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

Crisco shortening, no yeast. Interesting last step before baking, or brush tops with butter if you prefer.

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Combine dry ingredients, cut in shortening thoroughly, stir in buttermilk. Dough should be a soft, sticky putty (barely able to pick up and handle). Round up dough on floured board. Knead 5 times or until it will hold together. Roll out or pat to about 1/2" thick. Cut with floured biscuit cutter.
  3. Pour a thick layer of oil in baking pan. Put each biscuit in pan in oil, then turn over. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
