My son is on a low carb eating plan and I'm on Weight Watchers. The chili hit the spot on a cold rainy day and we both enjoyed it. I didn't care for the cinnamon so I'll probably leave that out. Mushrooms were a pleasant surprise. Served with reduced fat cheddar cheese and lean hot dog. Yummy!
I was really hoping I would like this, but I think the cinnamon was ultimately what ruined it for me. If I put enough cheese and sour cream in it, it tasted fine. But without any additions, the overall taste was a bit off. I'm also not totally sold on the mushrooms, but I didn't mind them as much as the cinnamon. My husband was very hesitant to try "low-carb chili" or "beanless chili" - unfortunately, his fears were validated when he tasted it. I will say -- it isn't absolutely terrible... it's just not that great. I think next time I want some low-carb chili, I will just use my old favorite chili recipe and omit the beans.
I've been doing a low carb diet and my co-workers decided to do a chili cook-off. I made this recipe & it was a hit!! I used one carton of fresh sliced mushrooms and sautéed them for just a bit instead of buying canned ones - it was great!
Wow...this is a really great. Even if you are not on a LC diet, you will surely appreciate this tasty dish. I honestly had doubts when putting in the mushrooms, allspice and cinnamon, but not anymore! Thank you!
Loved this. Used less water and added diced and stewed tomatoes. I also used a mix of diced stew meat and ground beef. Delicious! Served with diced onion, sour cream and cheese.
Back on low-carb, and was looking for variations of the LC chili I had made as a staple before. This recipe is a really nice change. I liked the combination of spices, including the cinnamon (although I used slightly less than 1 tsp.). Since I didn't have any green pepper, I threw in a can of Rotel tomatoes with green chilis. I only had tomato sauce, so I used less water and added a packet of Splenda, since tomato sauce does not have the sweetness of tomato paste.
I am on a low-carb diet and this recipe really satisfied my chili craving. It doesn't even taste like something you would eat on a diet. The cinnamon gives it a pop and it makes it taste amazing. I left the mushrooms out and I didn't let it sit for 3 hours. I plan on going to the store tonight so that I can make another pot to take to lunch at work! Thanks for the awesome recipe!
I really like this recipe as I am on a low carb diet. I doubled the recipe and it made enough for 6 meals, which I put in the freezer. I did not have allspice or peppers so I left them out and added about 2 cups of chopped celery, which worked really well. I added the cinnamon.
At first I wasn't too sure of this chili... the cinnamon and allspice gave it a very different flavor than I'm used to. But in the end it seemed the more I ate it, the more I liked it. The flavors are reminiscent of African food I enjoyed long ago. We ate this with sour cream and cheddar cheese. Thanks for sharing!
