I found this on the web somewhere don't remember where. This is easy to make and tastes good.
- 1⁄4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1⁄2 cup cornmeal
- 1⁄4 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Combine dry ingredients.
- Add egg and milk.
- Stir well.
- Should be the consistency of bread batter.
- If too thin add more corn meal or flour.
- Drop by teaspoonful into hot grease.
- Cook until brown.
Strangely enough.. people have given reviews that are inconsistent with Long John Silvers original recipe. It IS suppose to be dense... it DOES have an onion in it... and it does NOT have salt and pepper. I worked there as a teenager ... this recipe comes out just like the store bought. Thanks for passing it on.
I should have noticed that salt and pepper (or any seasonings) were missing. Unfortunately, I'd already made a few before I tasted one. I seasoned the rest of the batter, but they just weren't very tasty. I also thought they were a little dense/heavy, and there was way too much onion for the amount of batter.
I just had Long John Silvers hush puppies yesterday and thought I would try this recipe. It does Not taste like theirs. It needs a more sweet onion flavor and less salty from the garlic salt. It is also to dry. I will have to tinker with the recipe.
