  • Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cornstarch in the top of a double boiler.
  • Slowly add scalded milk to beaten egg yolks; stir into sugar mixture.
  • Cook and stir in top of double boiler over hot, but not boiling, water until custard coats spoon.
  • Remove from heat and add vanilla to 1 cup of the custard.
  • Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted.
  • Pour this mixture into the bottom of the baked and cooled pie shell; chill.
  • Meanwhile soften gelatin in cold water; add remaining hot custard; stir until dissolved. Chill until slightly thick.
  • Beat egg whites until soft peaks form; beat in 1/2 cup sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
  • Fold in the custard gelatin mixture.
  • Pile over chocolate layer; chill until set.
