I made this recipe yesterday and they were so horrible I threw them away. They were hollow, greasy, looked like bad yorkshire pudding. Made them again today because DH said I had to have done something wrong. Same results. I was sure it wasn't me because I am a mis en place kinda cook. I thought since it was Kitten they would be perfect. Save yourself the grief and try a different cupcake. DH is trying to take a photo so you can see todays disaster. I am so sorry. We were trying recipes for a wedding shower for 125 people and thank goodness I didn't give the recipe to the helpers. Sorry Kittencal.

These were weird. I followed the recipe exactly. They had a very cornbread like texture. And to my surprise, even a bit of a cornbread taste! ....like a vanilla cornbread. They still tasted alright, just strange. If someone gave me one, I would probably eat it. However, I do not intend to make them again.

This was a decent vanilla cupcake with not much cleanup. I think it had more of a corn bread consistency then a cake (I don't know how else to describe it).

Before making this recipe, I sorted the reviews by rating and read and best and worst three pages. I figured the good reviews outweighed the bad and decided to try them anyway, and I'm sorry I did. As another reviewer said, these manage to be dry and oily all at once. The cake isn't fluffy but more mealy. I used extra vanilla and even scraped a vanilla bean into the batter based on some reviews saying these were bland, and although that helped a bit, these still didn't have much flavor. The only good thing about them is that they're an excuse to eat frosting.

Like the past two responders, my cupcakes too turned out strange. I followed everything to the tee, but my cupcakes tasted like cornbread too! =( oh well..On to look for a new vanilla cupcake recipe

I was really disappointed by these, especially since they are the top-rated cupcake recipe. The taste was just ok, the etxture was weird. They didn't taste like cornbread to me, but the texture was similar. Also mine didn't really rise. I didn't have a mixer so I just mixed by hand, I wonder if that's why they didn't rise? Anyway, I won't be making these again.

I was laughing at a review that said these tasted like cornbread and decided to make them anyway because they got an overall 4 star rating. I'm not laughing anymore. These do taste like cornbread! Why is everyone giving them more than one star! I didn't want to sign up to make vanilla cornbread muffins for desert :(

i made these and they taste a lot more like cornbread muffins instead of a vanilla cupcake. i wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wanted a cupcake. i would however definitely suggest this to someone who has a disorder where they can't eat nuts, seeds, or coarse grains, like cornmeal, as a substitute for cornbread. it tastes almost identical.

Giving 2 stars since the cake part was SO bland. I followed the recipe to a tee and still bland. It tastes ok with frosting on top but eating the bottom alone is just gross!

the taste was ok, but the texture was horrible. They came out extremly dry. Definetly will not make these again.

It looked like a cupcake, tasted like a cookie, with the texture of cornbread. Not a bad taste, but for sure not a cupake. I must have done something wrong, very wrong

I have made these cupcakes twice now, and both times they were HORRIBLE, they were too tough and had no flavor! I would never reccomend these to anyone, I was vey disappointed and was shocked when both times they turned out nasty! :(

This was a very easy recipe and I followed it exactly as written, didn't overcook, etc., but they were very disappointing. They had a strange texture, not cake-like at all, and very little taste. I won't be making them again. Sorry.

I was very excited to try this recipe after seeing all of the wonderful reviews but I didn't have the best luck with my attempt. They came out more like corn bread though I didn't mind that too much. Some of my cupcakes overflowed the muffin cup and on taking them out the tops came right off! LOL!! Maybe I baked them too long? The flavor was just ok for me. Although this recipe now restores my faith in 'One Bowl' recipes. I tried a different one bowl recipe from a cookbook and they came out awful, dry and texture-less . So now I know they don't all come out that way. This was a nice recipe though.

I made these a week ago but didn't review it because I didn't want to hurt Kitt's feelings.....but since then I've noticed others posted what I was thinking so here it goes: I was really excited to make these given the great reviews. I followed the recipe exactly but was disappointed. They came out dense and not moist and were blah tasting. Sorry but I won't be making these again

I've made this recipe twice and both times the cupcakes end up dense, cornbread or muffin-like. I bake often and have a great oven. Very disappointing product, given the rave reviews. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Will try improvising. Again.

These did not work for me at all, but I don't know why. I didn't make any substitutions, and I followed the directions as stated. But they baked oddly- they rose but not in the usual nice rounded-top the way cupcakes and muffins do. They were sort of oily and dry all at the same time. In the end, I threw them out.

These are very good cupcakes and incredibly easy to prepare. They rose evenly and had a good vanilla flavour. I did two batches - one with butter and the other with vegetable oil and they were both good. Easy cleanup and would have given 5 stars but thought they could have been just a tad moister but maybe that was just me??? I added a couple of pictures. Thank you.

I made these as written and they were a little too sweet for me. Next time I'll add a 1/4 cup less sugar as suggested. I added some extra half and half because the batter seemed thick. The texture of the cupcakes was beautiful. I got 19 cupcakes plus one tiny one.

YUMMY!!! KittenCal said "one bowl" so I went even easier and threw EVERYTHING at the same time into a blender and hit the mix button! I used stick margarine in place of Crisco or Butter since there was a debate. They came out PERFEECT!!! A great vanilla base for your favorite icing to be the star!
