This was a little too sweet for my tastes. I think next time I'll decrease the amount of sugar and up the chili powder. I liked the mushrooms in it and the peppers and V8 added some nice flavor.

Oh I just loved it! I had Venison that I ground up and added to this along with some ground pork. Sweet and spicy!! I just love Crock pot meals!

Made this last night for 6 people.
This went over well and I actually used 2 pkgs of Yves Ground Round to make it Vegetarian and no one noticed. This is a very sweet recipe, I used 4 tbsp of brown sugar but it could have used less. Plus I only used 2 jalapeno peppers, non spicy V8 and no Cumin and a little over half of the chili powder and it still had a zing to it. So if you do not like spice, go with less of everything.
Plus, there just seemed to be not enough beans for such a large amount (this makes a very big batch of chili), so I added another 2 cans of beans but then there was too much for the slow cooker, so I transferred it all into a large pot and cooked it on the stove top for a couple of hours.
It came out thick and tasty, I will definitely make this again.

This is my absolute favorite chili recipe! It is spicy, full of flavor and thick. You could add sour cream to it to tame the spice, but why would you want to? Really, if you want a spicy chili full of flavor, that truly is very easy to make.....this is the recipe for you.
I always make the recipe exactly like its written the first time I make it. Then, if I don't like something I will modify it. This recipe was perfect!
The only thing I removed the second time I made it was the mushrooms. I like mushrooms, but I didn't like them in the chili. However, that being said, the original recipe with the mushrooms is incredible!
I didn't have a crockpot big enough for all the chili, so I simmered it for 1 to 2 hours on the stovetop.
This is now my chili recipe, and the only one I will make. :)

Sign in or create an accountI used this recipe for a chili cookoff with friends, and no surprise, we won! I used the minimum amount of sugar, and the maximum recommended amount of jalapeño, but this is still a sweet chili. People told me it was a unique, meaty chili...some even asked if there was BBQ sauce in it! Great texture, smells great, and the taste is award winning!

This was absolutely amazing! My family didn't even like chili until now. I like another writer used 2 cans of Rotel/chiles because my family is already familiar with it. I also used regular V8 instead of spicy and no jalepeno . The chili still has a great kick! I think it would have been way too hot for my family with the other ingredients. This chili is like an explosion inside your mouth. This is a keeper!

I have made this several times and love it! I'm not usually a big fan of chili but this stuff rocks! It's got the perfect amount of heat and not too many beans. Actually, I usually add an extra can of beans. Wonderful recipe! Thanks!

I thought this was the best chili I have ever made. My DH did not like it as much, but I don't really count him because he does like good food.

OMG! What a wonderful recipe! Thank you! Although I am sure that this recipe is awesome as posted what it does is give you very good basics to adjust to your family's likes and dislikes and it still works. Also, being slow cooked adjustments can be made along the way for anything you aren't sure of. Think it might be too sweet for you? Then add the minimal sugar and taste it an hour later and adjust till it works. I knew for my family to leave out the jalepenos and stewed tomatoes. In it's place I added 2 -10 oz cans of ROTEL tomatoes with green chilis and that worked for us. Also as a shopping note...2 - 12 oz bottles of the SPICY V-8 was exactly 3 cups. Thank you again for posting this!

Seriously the best chili my husband and I have ever tried. I asked my husband to give me his rating and he stated "I've never had a chili anywhere near as good as this!". I agree! I used 4 jalapenos and fresh garlic rather than garlic powder. I used the full amount of chili powder and used about an extra tablespoon (or 2) of fresh squeezed lime juice. I cut the sugar WAY down to about 2-3 teaspoons, added an extra dash or two of worcestershire, used 2 cans of hot and spicy chili beans (that I drained but did not rinse) and added the cup of beef broth. I browned it all and put this all in my 6 quart crockpot and let it cook on low for about 6-7 hours. The house smelled DIVINE while it was cooking and the final result was sheer perfection! I served this over pasta shells for my kids and I with a dash of fresh grated cheddar on top. My husband ate the chili straight up with the cheese and a bit of sour cream. My kids LOVED this! The amount of sweet/spice was perfect! Totally fine for a 2 and 4 year old and perfectly spiced to my husband and I who normally love things hot but felt the flavor in this didn't warrant needing it to be hot. This is a true winner and definitely worthy of winning a chili contest. Thank you so much wildflour! We ADORED this and this has now become my regular chili recipe. I'm throwing my old one out!

Other than add 2 tsp. cocoa powder to the pot, I made following the recipe to the letter. It was so good everyone was diving for it at our Chili Potluck supper at the church. Thank you so much for making me look so good Wildflour!

I made this for a football party, and everyone loved it and asked for the recipe. It made enough for a crowd of 12 with quite a few people going back for second helpings. The mushrooms surprised quite a few people, but no one complained! I only had a cup of ketchup and made up the difference with tomato sauce. I de-seeded the jalapenos, but next time won't do that so the chili will have more kick. We served the chili with shredded cheddar, chopped onions, and sour cream -- excellent! Thank you, we'll be making this recipe often.

Very good crock pot recipe! I left the sugar out all together, good round flavor even without.

Sign in or create an accountI made this chili Saturday; it was way too sweet for me. Next time I'll cut the sugar down to 2 tablespoons because I think the catsup also contributes to the sweetness.

Nice recipe. However I did what others suggested and used less of the brown sugar 3 tbls. I think next time I will use only 1 tbls as it still was sweet, and over powered the spicyness of it. Overall a really good tasting chili and one I will probably make again.
Update: Just made this for the super bowl 2012. I used less brown sugar 2 tbls, and decided to cut the peppers, onion, hot peppers and garlic and put in a container, then in another container mix the other ingredients. Let stand in fridge overnight. This morning I browned the meat with the onion, pepper mix and put all in crockpot. My only addition was to add hot garlic spice to the meat as it browned and in the sauce mixture itself. Just tasted it and it is by far the best chili I have ever had. Love it!

Let me start by saying i'm not a huge chili fan, but this was pretty awesome!! I left out the jalapeno because i was using a new chili powder and not sure hot hot it was gonna be. I used Penzeys chili 3000. I also didn't use the canned tomato. I used tomato paste and just added an additional cup of V8 Juice. It had an initial taste of sweet then a nice slow heat. My whole family LOVED it. Thanks for a great recipe..
