I love Jerry Baker's helpful tips and household recipes, and here's another from his book. Dirty white socks will come clean as a whistle if you try this:
- water (1 medium or large pot, size of pot and amount of water depends on how many stained socks you want to)
- 1 lemon
- Boil water with the (sliced or quartered) lemon.
- Add socks.
- Boil for a couple of minutes, then wash as usual.
I admit I was skeptical when I tried this. I used this treatment on 4 socks at various stages of dirtiness, boiling them for 5 minutes. I put safety pins on them, and then washed a batch of socks. After they were done, we compared the treated socks and the untreated socks. There was no visible difference.
