Kathy's BBQ Ham Sandwich

"This recipe has been a favorite of our family for years. My children ask for it every holiday as a Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve after-supper snack. I like to slow cook this in a crock pot for about an hour or two. You can heat it on the stove to save time. This is best served on plain hamburger buns, but you can enjoy it on your favorite rolls if preferred. It is a messy sandwich, which is similar to a NC-Style BBQ, not thick so the sauce absorbs into the bun. The kids love it this way, so Enjoy!"

  1. This was nice but next time I will check the packaging on the ham closer for the sodium levels as this seemed overly salty to me. It was also very juicy, even though I left out the water completely. I did this on the stovetop and I think next time I would cook the sauce down some to thicken before adding the ham to it. I bought some of those thin sandwich buns to eat this on but it was so juicy it soaked right through the bun in the time it took me to take a picture (just a couple minutes). Definitely need a more substantial roll or bun for this filling. Except for the saltiness, the flavor was nice, so with just a couple minor changes I think this would be great! Thanks for sharing!

  2. After reading Susie D's review, I changed this up a bit. I reduced the water to 1/4 cup and added 1/3 cup each of ketchup and our favorite bbq sauce. Along with the mix, I also diced in a medium onion. It was a hit with the family... dad's happy! Great with a slice of swiss on a nice potato roll!

  3. Made for our family's supper, but will definitely keep this on hand for the next picnic or family gathering---delish! Didn't change a thing--perfect as is!!!! *Made for Spring 09 PAC*

  4. This recipe was selected as part of the Pick A Chef event. I was pleasantly surprised by this recipe as I had never had anything like it before. I selected it to utilize some ham I had in the freezer and would add this to my ham leftover cookbook. The taste sort of reminded me of sloppy joes. I did add a splash of liquid smoke. I found it took longer to reduce the sauce than directed so would probably cut back on the water next time. Thank you for sharing your recipe!

  5. Very easy to make. To me it kind of tasted like Pork and Beans, but hubby LOVES it

My Mom didn't like more than one cook (herself) in the kitchen at any given time, so I taught myself to cook after I lived on my own. I never liked the same old stuff so I had started to experiment with recipes. I found loads of recipes to play with throughout the years, even before the internet (grin). 15 years ago I met a man who loves to cook as much as me. We have been having loads of fun with the recipes that we find. We only post what we find a delight to make and eat.
