Joy of Cooking's Oatmeal Cookies

"Hands down the best cookies I've ever tasted. I make then all the time and am always asked for the recipe! Sometimes, instead of raisins, I put in chocolate chips, and (my favorite) chocolate covered raisins."

directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Sift (sifting is important!) flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg (its not in the recipe, but I add about 1/8-1/4 tsp of ground cloves, too) into a mixing bowl.
  • Beat butter, brown sugar, sugar, eggs, and vanilla with a hand mixer at medium speed.
  • Sift (yes, again!) flour mixture into butter mixture and mix well.
  • Fold in raisins (or chocolate chips or chocolate covered raisins) and oats.
  • Spoon 1.5 inch balls onto non-stick cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 350°F for 6-9 minutes, rotating half way through baking. (Should be lightly firm in the center when done) Be careful -- oatmeal raisin cookies don't look done when they are, so they are very easy to over cook (unless you want then to be crispy) :).

  1. I am curious if others have particular tips on this recipe, as it is the biggest fail I have made in probably 40 years. The dough seemed quite dry. The cookies did not spread but at the same time were barely cooked through after 10 minutes. (Yes, I have a separate oven thermometer.) I needed them for an event and was really disappointed to bring this cookie, but I didn’t have time to start over. Thankfully I had another type that turned out well.

  2. I love this recipe. I like to add craisins and chopped nuts / or butterscotch chips. I just recently cut the butter to 1 cube and added 1/4 C. applesauce instead to reduce the fat. They turned out good - not as rich, but much healthier.

  3. These were great! I added a little ginger and allspice and divided the dough in half so I could put chocolate chips in some, raisins in the other. These are so addictive, I have to force myself not to keep on eating them.

  4. My whole family loves these! I recommend baking them with chocolate chips!!
