Yummy popcorn balls that are quick, easy, and fun to make! I must confess that I've been making these since age twelve. And they can be made from any flavor of jello that appeals to you. A favorite is lime! Note: My recipe also calls for a full cup of sugar.
I have never had these before and wasn't that impressed with the finished product but I can see them really fun for kids to put together. It was really easy to do and the clean up wasn't bad at all. I was expecting the jello syrup to be hard to get off but it wasn't at all.
Quick to mix up, kids had fun making the balls.... We made it with WIld Berry--- not bad flavor. I can't wait to try Cherry :) Thanks for sharing.
Yummy! I too remember these in the '70s. There was this one mom of a gradeschool classmate who always made popcorn balls for her daughter's birthday treat. My mom never did, but I always looked forward to Vicki's birthday. As I prepped, I ran out of wax paper, so I sprayed a large rimmed cookie sheet, and spread the candied popcorn onto the sheet to cool. I'll just break it apart when it cools. I also added about an 1/8th of a teaspoon of salt to the freshly-popped popcorn, and it kind of took an edge off of the sweetness.
Thanks for posting this! My mom used to make these and I can't wait to make them for my own kids:)
Thank you! I lost my mom's recipe, and these turned out just the way I remembered them. She used to make them every year for my birthday, and I haven't had any in years. Great tip, by the way to wet your hands! We always used a ton of shortening to keep our hands from sticking to the balls.
These were really good! I used strawberry jello and the kids loved them. Can't wait to try different flavors.
very good! I like that there is virtually no fat, unlike the other recipes that ask for butter. They were pretty darn easy to make, and you can do all kinds of flavors. I did lime, and strawberry-banana. Before with a similar recipe I did a double batch using orange, and cranberry jello mixed together. The possibillities of flavors are ENDLESS!!!
I completely "Frankensteined" this recipe, as I didn't have enough corn syrup and used some marshmallows...also I only had SF jello...and not quite enough popcorn! So I eyeballed everything and they still came out great!
