  1. This is a family favorite and a popular dessert at pot-lucks. To save a step I decided to try mixing the vanilla pudding and Cool Whip together before spreading on the top of the cake. I got so many compliments after making this change it is the only way I make this now. Additional note - the vanilla/Cool Whip mixture is what I put in my cream puffs.

  2. This recipe brings back a lot of childhood memories. Although we never used pudding but that sounds very tasty. We also made it slightly different. We would use 3/4 cup boiling water to dissolve the Jell-O then we would use a 1 cup of a complimentary flavor soda pop (ice cold) to cool down the Jell-O. Such as orange crush with orange Jell-o or Squirt with Pineapple Jell-O. If you want to be fancy I sometimes make 2 flavors of Jell-O(Orange and Pineapple for instance) and use 1/2 of each flavor alternating flavors to spoon into every other it looks really pretty when sliced.

  3. Surprisingly good and out-of-control easy, I made this cake after one of my co-workers couldn't stop raving about how amazing Jell-O cake is. Naturally, I took it upon myself to try. He swore pudding shouldn't be used, so I left it out, but other users seemed to love that addition. I also used a whipped cream cheese frosting for the topping (recipe # 187817) and they went together SO well. I'd make this cake again and I'd definitely recommend cherry Jell-O.

  4. I made this with some modifications: Used a bigger pan, 15x10; and instead of two separate toppings of pudding and cool whip I followed the directions on the pudding box to make "Angel Lush". And then spead that on top of the cake. Simple and DELICIOUS!!!

  5. This was delicious! I added too much jello though which is not your fault at all just because i didn't read the directions right. It would have been better with less jello like you have posted in the recipe but it was still very very good. I used cherry jello instead of strawberry. I will be making this again but next time I will follow the directions. Thank you for a great recipe!

Tweaks

  1. I grew up with this cake. My mother always made it for my birthday. Only change was that she used 1/2 of a pack of sugar free Kool-Aid to color and flavor the pudding. If strawberry Jello, then strawberry Kool-Aid. Topped with Cool Whip. She always matched flavor of Jello with flavor of Kool-Aid.

  2. mixed vanilla pudding and Cool Whip together before spreading on top of cake

  3. I used 3 whole eggs instead of 3 egg whites, I think it turned out really well that way. I also used cherry jell-o, which was really great.

  4. This dessert is always good - and lends itself to variations. Started making it many years ago but now I use a choclate cake mix and cherry jello. Also substitute chocolate instant pudding for the vanilla.

  5. I am making this but using banana cream pudding and Cherry Jell-O super yummy
