It's a Whole Meal Keema Curry (Beef, Potatoes and Veg)

"I originally found this recipe in a Dutch language curry cookbook, but have changed it up somewhat. It tastes great, is quick and easy to prepare, is an entire meal, and not much to clean up afterwards. I would say the leftovers taste terrific cold the following day, but we rarely have anything to save!"

directions

  • In a small bowl or coffee cup combine the turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, ginger and chili powder.
  • In a large frying pan, saute onion, pepper and garlic in the oil until the onion softens.
  • Add the spice mix to the vegetable mixture in the frying pan and combine well.
  • Add the ground beef, stirring well and often to incorporate the spice mix with the beef and brown thoroughly.
  • Add the water and the tomato paste, again mixing well.
  • Cook this at a low to medium simmer until most of the water has cooked off.
  • Mix in the potatoes and the green beans, then the coconut milk (you may need to add a small amount of water to facilitate the mixing, but no more than 1/4 cup!).
  • Simmer till everything is heated through, and serve.

  1. We made this recipe as written, and found it to be a bit bland. I added a lot more cumin and curry, but it could have still used more. It was pretty good, but I will probably add more salt next time and more spices. Also we thought about trying it with cubes of beef instead of ground beef. On the plus side, it was very easy to make and would freeze very well, with a little tweaking might be a great time saver for a busy week. If we make it again I will update my review.

  2. I made this on a hunting trip and it was very good. I had no green beans because I really don't like them so I did not miss them, the taste was great I will make it again.

  3. I made this because I have never used mince in a curry before and I am so glad I did. This is always lovely and a few times I have made this with some frozen peas instead of beans which we find to be delicious also. Thankyou, FlemishMinx!

  4. Great recipe! I doubled the quantity of tomato paste, addes salt and brown suger for a more intense flavour. There was enough to feed 2 of us for dinner and have the left-overs in a wrap for lunch the next day. Yum!!

  5. A great taste. I made no changes except I added 1-1/2 tsp salt. I boiled fresh green beans together with the potatoes then used 1 cup of water from that in the recipe. I will make this again. Great recipe FlemishMinx.

I am an American married to a Belgian, and have lived in Belgium since December 1999. Cooking is my major hobby. I'm also an avid reader, but I have difficulty finding the time. I love to travel. Since moving to Europe I've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to go a couple of times per year to Paris, as well as having visited London, Rome, Florence, Naples, Amsterdam, and of course Brussels and Antwerp. I've seen at least parts of most regions of France, as well as parts of Germany, Austria, a great deal of Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Luxembourg, and Monaco. I'm absolutely in love with the Bay of Naples and Sorrento coast areas of Italy, which my husband and I recently re-visited on a trip that included Rome, Puglia, Umbria and Marche. I'm still looking forward to Ireland, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic . . . the list is too long ! One of the bonuses of travel is getting to taste the local cuisine, and afterward trying to figure out how to duplicate it at home. I think cooking is one of the nicest things a person can do for someone they love (including themself!) I had to submit a picture with me and my cat, Sophie, as she insists on sitting in my lap when I'm sitting at the computer. If you are wondering what all that stuff hanging on the wall behind us in the photo is, it is just a small part of my husband's military medal collection. He was appalled by my posting this picture-- Our study is the messiest room in our house (thank god!)
