Irish Soda Bread With Raisins

A very moist, lovely and flavorful bread.

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F
  2. Spray 8-inch-diameter cake pan with nonstick spray.
  3. Whisk flour, 4 tablespoons sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda in large bowl to blend.
  4. Add butter.
  5. Using fingertips, rub in until coarse meal forms.
  6. Make well in center of flour mixture.
  7. Add buttermilk.
  8. Gradually stir dry ingredients into milk to blend.
  9. Mix in raisins.
  10. Using floured hands, shape dough into ball.
  11. Transfer to prepared pan and flatten slightly (dough will not come to edges of pan).
  12. Sprinkle dough with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
  13. Bake bread until brown and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 40 minutes.
  14. Cool bread in pan 10 minutes.
  15. Transfer to rack.
  16. Serve warm or at room temperature.

I found that the recipe needed more flour, approximately 1/2 cup to 1 cup more.

I am writing from Romania. It has been my first attempt at making Irish soda bread. I was simply curious, as I had never tasted it before. It came out quite well, though I believe I used a little bit more butter than I should have. It is indeed excellent with coffee or tea, or even with a glass of wine. Thank you for sharing!

Greetings from Portugal. Well you definitly got a winner here! This is the perfect bread receipe I have ever made!!!!!!! I too added in some raisins, and about 1/3 cup of walnuts, other than that no other changes were made. I will definitly make this over again. Thanks for sharring with all of us receipe lovers.
