      It took a few minutes, but it did work on my very itchy insect bites. My only complaint is after you put it on, you have to be very careful not to let the treated body parts touch clothing or furniture because of the stickiness. UPDATE: For those who prefer anointment/salve type remedies, this recipe will work, but I've since learned another very good remedy that is a lot less messy. Heat a mug of water in the microwave till hot but not boiling, dip a spoon in the hot water and press the hot spoon against the bug bite. This works quickly and gives hours of relief. Be very careful you don't burn yourself!

      (wow those are long reviews!) Just popped in to say a heartfelt thank you to you Rita! I developed odd rashes on my thighs recently and they were itching like mad! I used 1 tsp of baking soda to 1 tsp of honey and olive oil each, and swiped it onto my rash. I must say that it has stopped itching, and looks less swollen! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D

      I don't know what happened to my comment without a rating, but I'm back to rate this for its effectiveness, although I did add to the recipe a bit. I halved this recipe and mixed it up in an empty, clean baby food jar and used it on my lips instead of an insect bite, although I did have a couple of those at the time I searched for a homemade remedy. Whenever my immune system acts up due to illness or stress (and unfortunately one of those problems happens a lot to me) I will usually break out in a cold sore. I had a cold sore on my lower lip that had nearly, but not completely healed and my lips were painfully cracked and dry. My lips are almost always dry, cracked, or peeling. This mixture was very soothing on my dry lips and I slept with it on for two nights straight. This mixture made a quick difference, after just two nights with this honey, olive oil, and baking soda mixture on, the texture of my lips improved by at least 50%. Normally I will put on some Aquaphor Healing balm or just petroleum jelly (which is mainly what the Aqauphor healing balm is anyway) and the next morning my lips just feel moisturized but flaky. When I used your recipe, I did not have flakiness, but smooth, if not very slightly sticky lips the next morning (the stickiness faded after eating and brushing my teeth and such, but the softness remained. They stayed smooth all day long. I also used this in conjunction with a menthol lip balm during the day (the honey mixture at night). I decided then to add in some epsom salts, probably 1/8 of a cup or a litte more and mixed in until all epsom salts were saturated. I exfoliated my hands and lips with this, and it was so soothing! I still have enough for a few more applications this way. But now, alas, I am out of honey and nearly out of olive oil. But I'm glad I found this. Whether the cold sore was on its way out without the help of this mixture, I think the mixture really helped to soothe the itchiness of the healing proceess and having dried out lips doesn't help a cold sore, so the protective moisture barrier of the honey mixture probably helped a lot. If I get another one, I will try this mixture at the start and see if it improves the healing. Those expensive otc creams don't usually work for me, sometimes they make the cold sore worse. Meanwhile I'll continue to use what I have left to exfoliate my lips. Thank you, Rita, I'm really glad you shared this. :) I wish I had enough ingredients to make myself a bath! :D

      This also works on other skin irritations! I didn’t have any insect bites available to try this on, but I had a very irritated area on my ring finger, under the spot where my wedding set (wide band) rests - (this usually happens in the winter and when I have my hands in water often). This "honey salve" actually relieved the itching. Later I applied some thick cream, and my finger is on its way back to normal (I also gave myself a break from the rings). Thanks Rita! I'll remember this for the summer when the bugs are out, too!
