  1. For the sauce, combine first 4 ingredients in large, heavy skillet with lid.
  2. Stir to combine mixture well as butter melts and heat to boiling.
  3. Reduce heat to simmer before dropping dumplings inches.
  4. For the Dumplings: combine sugar, baking powder, salt and flour.
  5. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  6. Stir in milk and vanilla extract just until combined.
  7. Drop the dumplings by spoonfuls into sauce.
  8. Cover and simmer for 12-15 minutes, turning dumplings halfway through cooking time.
