This is so simple to make but tastes so good! My mom made this for us when we were younger and still a favorite of mine. Smoked sausage could also be used but I prefer the hot dogs. Serve this over mashed potatoes for total comfort food.
- 8 hot dogs, I use Ball Park
- 793.78 g sauerkraut
- In a large skillet add the sauerkraut. Place hot dogs on top of the kraut.
- Cover and let simmer 15-20 minutes or until hot dogs are plump and hot.
- Serve over mashed potatoes.
Memories of childhood on a plate. All this time I just thought it was one of my family's crazy dishes. I do season the kraut with pepper and fry it in a tad of bacon drippings just like gramma used to do. Think I'll head to the kitchen right now to whip this little "treasure" up for lunch right now! Thanks Lauralie for the memories & for posting this old favourite.
Fast, inexpensive meal that you can have on the table in half an hour. I love krautdogs, so I new I would enjoy this dish. I added a little brown sugar and some Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy and settled down to a great dinner. I can't wait to use the leftovers tomorrow making krautdogs. Thanks for sharing, Lauralie41. Made for April, 2009 Aussie/NZ Swap.
I don't have to try this to know how good it is, my mother made this all the time when we were growing up - only difference is she added chopped onions. I remember coming home from school and smelling sauerkraut cooking and eagerly awaiting dinner, mmmmm. Mom always made lots so she would have plenty of leftovers where she would slice the hot dogs into bite size pieces, mix them with the leftover sauerkraut and mashed potatoes and reheat them in a frying pan with melted butter. My favorite dish growing up.
