Hot Cocoa Mix

"Recipe courtesy Alton Brown. I love it because there is no coffee creamer and no chocolate drink mix in the recipe."

directions

  • Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and incorporate evenly. In a small pot, heat 4 to 6 cups of water.
  • Fill your mug half full with the mixture and pour in hot water. Stir to combine. Seal the rest in an airtight container, keeps indefinitely in the pantry. This also works great with warm milk.

  1. I LOVE Alton Brown! This was super easy, all with stuff I had on hand - used Epicure Selections Pure Cocoa - a little expensive but made this into awesome hot chocolate! Made for PAC Spring '13

  2. I mixed this up one night for my mom since she loves hot cocoa, but had run out of cocoa mix. I used milk powder that came in envelopes, and ended up with about 1/2 cup milk powder leftover, so I just added it in with everything else. I thought it tasted like it had a little too much cornstarch and next time I may leave out the extra 2 teaspoons of cornstarch. My mom thought it tasted just fine, though. I just had regular Hershey's cocoa powder and it turned out fine, I'm looking forward to ordering some dutch-process cocoa powder and trying it the "right" way. I mixed this in the food processor and it did a great job of mixing everything up finely. I used 1/4 cup of mix for an 8 oz. mug of water. Delicious, easy to make up and keep on hand, and it's nice to know what's in my cocoa mix!
