We really enjoyed this soup. I did make a major change though. I used two cans of white beans. One I used as directed, and the other one I pureed in the blender with half of the onions and a little chicken broth. This gave our soup a creamier, thicker texture and great flavor. I did use all fresh veggies and enjoyed that, however we felt the carrots did not go with this soup at all and after a bite or two of the carrots, I started eating around them. I love carrots, they just didn't work for me here! I wasn't sure if DH would like this as he's picky about soups but he asked for another bowl as a late night snack!! Such a great way to use up leftover ham! OH we also sprinkled a little shredded cheddar cheese on top of the hot soup!! Great addition.

Very yummy, I left out the carrots because I do not like cooked carrots, otherwise the soup was wonderful. I did use fresh potatoes.

This is a great, fast, easy to make ham and bean soup. It has a great semi-spicy taste. I didn't make any changes and my family loved it.

Very good soup. I also pureed 1/3 of the beans for the cream effect. I used 2 bay leafs instead of 1. 2 small fresh diced potatoes. 3 small cans chicken broth. good eaten!

This was good. I used fresh vegetables instead of canned but otherwise followed the recipe.

This was beautiful and hearty. I used dried beans, just cooked them thoroughly before adding any other ingredients (which were fresh also). I also added some celery and fresh parsley and used chicken 'Better than Bouillon.' My kids had thirds!

Used fresh veggies but otherwise made following the recipe. I used leftover ham shoulder. Flavors were so good! Will make again sometime!

Very good soup! I doubled everything except carrots and parsley, used fresh potatoes and omitted bay leaf. I also rinsed the beans good before adding them. Will definitely be making this one again! Thanks!

I have made this twice now. It has turned out very well both times. I make the recipe as written but use fresh potatoes, carrots, and onions. Thank you Chris for posting! When I am short on time I will certainly go ahead and get the canned potatoes. My sister has made this also and she likes it also.

Absolutely fabulous! I needed a recipe to use up my Christmas ham and came across this one. I made it in the crockpot, omitted the bay leaf, used one can of veggie broth and one of chicken broth (both fat free) and used fresh cracked pepper. When cooked, I used my hand blender for a few pulses, just enough to change the texture to somewhat creamy. This was loved by everyone in my house. Thanks for this keeper of a recipe!

Delicious! I love ham and bean soup and this was a great, easy recipe that really hits the spot on a cold winter day.

Sign in or create an accountThis is how I make mine and for all you new comers this is by far the best way to snuggle up to a movie ! I like to make homemade bread with this one, as I do my corned beef and cabbage soup. Yum. Sometimes I get in the mood and add butter beans to this soup. forgot to say that I use all fresh veggies and do all from scratch.

This soup was absolutely amazing! I had leftover ham from a Christmas party, and didn't want it to go to waste. It was an easy recipe, and tasted wonderful. It hit the spot in the midst of a cold rainy night. :)

This is SO good! I made a few changes. I used everything fresh and sauteed the fresh ingredients with butter first before adding everything else in. This was THE BEST soup I have ever had! The second time I used link sausage instead of ham and it was delicious as well.

My goodness - I didn't think I could cook as well as my mother but this recipe proved it. This was so similiar to hers. I didn't use canned potatoes or carrots so I had to add peeling time but it was an EASY recipe to make. Thank you for posting.

Excellent way to use up ham leftovers from Easter. This is surprisingly very good, the only thing I would change is to add another can of broth as our family prefers to have more broth but that is just a personal preference, nothing wrong with the recipe as it has the perfect flavor, surprisingly good. Rather than canned veggies, I used baby carrots that I cut into coin sizes as well as potato that I had pre cooked in the microwave and then added in the last 5 minutes. The ham really infuses the soup with its smoky sweet flavor. Thanks for posting.

Have made this soup twice now and prepared it once as in the recipe above and the second time, pureeing the vegetables and ham (once cooked)in batches until smoother in texture, then returning it to the pan to heat a bit longer. Delicious both ways -- just a great recipe!!

Let's just say we made 2 batches in one week - it's that good. We also went the fresh veggies route. Used homemade turkey broth from thanksgiving and added 1 tsp. of dried thyme leaves. Thanks, Scott

I just got done trying this and it was really good. I also used fresh taters and carrots and dried beans that I had previously cooked and froze. The only big change I made was using Keilbasa instead of ham (that was all I had) it gave the soup a really nice flavor. I just cooked the keilbasa first and drained the fat then proceeded as directed. I cooked it a little longer because of the fresh veggies. Thanks for an inexpensive great tasting recipe, I'll definately be serving it on a regualr basis.

I loved this. I did use fresh veggies, I don't like canned. I did however have to add 2 more cups of water with chicken bouillion cubes. It was wonderful! My hubby loved it! A keeper!
