Save yourself heaps of money and make your own baby cereal. The same principle can be used for a host of grains and even lentils...

  1. Get out your electric spice or coffee grinder and clean it well.
  2. Pop a tablespoonful in the grinder and whizz until it is powder[about 30 seconds].
  3. Cook in a little water.

This is how I make cereal for my youngest daughter. I use many different grains/beans. She especially loves millet prepared this way! It really is so easy and nutritionally superior to the refined variety in the grocery store!

A wonderful alternative to store bought rice cereal! Our 6 month old is quite fond of the cereal made with short grain organic brown rice. It takes about 10 minutes to cook on the stovetop and it's worth the wait. I grind about a cup of rice on Sundays and store the powdered cereal in a glass jar in the fridge until I am ready to use it during the week.

I gave this 5 stars as it is so much cheaper to do this than buy the store bought. I do this with oatmeal also. Although I thought I would pass along what our pediatrician told us. She said that until our baby started eating meats (her recommendation was at 9 months) was when we could start making our own baby cereal. This is due to the fact that store bought baby cereals have added iron which baby needs.
