  1. Sauté sausage with onions, peppers, and celery until sausage is browned and crumbly.
  2. Add beans, brown sugar, cumin and tomatoes.
  3. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, for about 30 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally.

Not the best chili we've ever had but edible. The instructions are very poorly written, ingredients listed, brown sugar, cumin and tomato sauce, not included in instructions, When should they be added?? By the time they were half simmered I noticed these 3 ingredients sitting on the counter and realized I had not added them to the chili; having just followed the instructions. So they were only in the chili for the last 15 minutes of simmer, which probably made the chili looser than it should have been. They might have been tastier had they been added at least at the beginning of the simmering. I used hot Italian sausage links with the casings removed. Made this chili for tonites supper. It was very bland, til I doctored it up. This chili really needed something to give it a "kick", so I added exactly 1 tablespoon of the ground cumin, and added 2 tablespoons of chili powder. I also added an (8 oz.) can of tomato sauce, (to thicken it up) but cut back on the onions, and just added 1/2 a cup, since the pork sausage I added, was our own homemade sausage, which our family makes, and it already has some onions and fresh garlic ground into it. I thought I should let y'all know, I had added exactly (1 lb.) of the pork sausage, a large pinch of the brown sugar, subbed green bell peppers for the red, and used the following ounces of canned beans and tomatoes...1-(15.5 oz.) can of Happy Harvest Mexican Style Chili Beans (from Aldi's)...1-(15.25 oz.) can Great Value Black Beans (from Walmart)...and 1-(28 oz.) can Dei Fratelli Stewed Tomatoes. This ended up being really good chili, and w/the added spices, it's now an excellant tasting chili. "Thanx" for the recipe Mimi. It was delish!!

I think it's one of the best chilis our family has had. Certainly beats Hormel and other recipes. We like ours with red kidney beans with or without the blackbeans.
