Hamburger and Kidney Beans

"Another simple (and fast) yet tastey recipe from my husband's childhood. When I asked Curt the name of this particular recipe, he said, "Hamburger and Kidney Beans". When I asked again, he gave me the same answer. I wanted it to have some really cool name that I could use here on the site, but this is it: Hamburger and Kidney Beans. His mom would cook this and would just serve it plain. It was Curt that added the Mashed Potatoes later. I omitted the recipe for instant mashed potatoes, assuming that you all know how to make them to your own likeing. Of course you can always use real mashed potatoes, but in a time crunch you can use instant, or this would be great for left over mashed as well. You can adjust this recipe easily to fit your family size."

  1. My dad used to make this for me when I was little except he added onion to the hamburger and he served it up with super buttery mashed potatoes. I make it now for my family. I still love it as much as an adult as I did as a kid!

  2. I just finished a large helping for an early dinner. I served it over rice, and I must say, as another poster stated, this is excellent comfort food! I love beans served over rice. Now, I also have leftovers for tortillas. I will admit to adding a splash of Texas Pete hot sauce to my serving. But then, I eat it on almost everything anyway. Versitile, simple, fast, and great for leftovers.

  3. I grew up near Pittsburgh, PA. Dad is ScotsIrish - they like their dinner bland. We had Kidney beans and Hamburg once a week! We put it over boiled potatoes that we smashed with our forks! I thought Mom made it up because no one else ever heard of it!! THANKS FOR SHARING!

  4. I grew up on this dish! My mom also added onion to the hamburger. Did not drain the beans but would crush about 1/4 of the beans creating a thick gravy. Topped with chopped green onions in bowls.

  5. Iadded some copped onion to the beef and used both cans of bean juice, A dash of cayenne for interest, a can of diced potatoes from my covid stash and an envelope of onion gravy mix. I let it simmer a little while and it was amazing. We had a cook when I was growing up and I never had great food like this. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, what a year and it's only May! We moved to Tucson from Missouri in late March and We Love it! Madly Huge differnce from the Show-me State. It REALLY is a Dry Heat! My husband grew up in the desert in California and has been wanting to wander this way since we met, and when the opportunitycame our way, we set off. I am always on the lookout for new-to-me old cookbooks. I love to read the cookbooks to get ideas and inspiration. I particularly enjoy the ones that read like books. For the amount of cooks books I own it is surprizing just how little I ever follow a recipe. I am always and forever reinventing recipes and making them suit our tastes. We have tried a few restaurants in Tucson and look forward to the vast diversity that the city offers.. We have found the perfect little taco stand that serves wonderful tacos and many other items we want to try!
