Questions & Replies

  1. I thought if I cut potatoes thin it would cook. It didn't. So how do you pre-cook the potatoes?

Reviews

  1. This is a great recipe I use Swiss & sharp cheddar because my family loves sharp cheddar cheese & not big fans of Swiss. I followed other reviews of not as much flour & cut the amount in half. We all enjoyed it & great way to use up leftover ham. I also doubled recipe.

  2. This was really good. Both kids even asked for seconds. I added 1/4 cup more milk and still thought the sauce was a bit too thick so next time I'll add even more. Also added garlic powder and extra pepper. This is definitely a keeper for us. Thank you!

  3. Excellent! We all love scalloped potatoes and ham in our house. This dish is better than plan old scalloped potatoes. My son hates swiss cheese but just loved it in this recipe. I doubled the recipe and I'm glad I did. There's not alot of it left over. :-)

  4. I made this with some leftover ham I had it I'm so glad I did because it was absolutely delicious. Creamy, cheesy and comforting. Perfect for this chilly weather.

  5. This was delicious! I cooked carrots and garlic with the onions and used cheddar and american cheeses. Omitted the breadcrumbs due to personal preference. My 4 year old loved it and the leftovers were just as good and didn't last long!

Tweaks

  1. Like other reviewers I used leftover ham (Smithfield, spiral) and doubled the recipe. Instead of salt I added couple of ham bouillion (Knorr brand) which gave it a nice "hammy" taste, next time I will only use 1 cube of bouillion due to the saltiness. I didn't have Swiss cheese, therefore used shredded cheddar and velveeta to impart creaminess; used a bit more cheese than the recipe called for. Thought the amount of flour was too much as it would produce a too thick a sauce, so I added a bit more than 1/2 the amount. Instead of bread crumbs, I used crushed Ritz crackers. It all came out perfect and delightfully delicious. We all had seconds and I will place this recipe in my "keeper" file. This would make a great pot luck dish!

  2. I know a recipe is a winner when my husband tells me to heat the leftovers the following night! Except for using cheddar cheese instead of the swiss, I followed the recipe exactly. I served it with green beans and corn bread muffins. Easy, yummy and a great comfort food! Too bad I can't award it more stars.

  3. Yummy! Very easy to prepare with lots of flavor. I used some chopped shallots instead of the onion and I only had Jarlsberg cheese on hand. I'm also glad I cut back on the salt, as the ham I was using had enough. My topping of choice was panko crumbs. :)

  4. I loved this! I followed everything exactly, except I used reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese instead of the Swiss cheese; it was what I had on hand. Also, I just sprinkled some dry bread crumbs that I had in a can I bought- I probably used about 1/4 cup. Since I made this along with BJTAILLIGHTS' "Easy Ham and Noodles," I baked it at 375 degrees for about 25 minutes, maybe not even, and it was perfect. This made a nice small dish, only enough to feed at most 3 people. But, since I had the other dish as well, it was enough food to go around! My dad's first words when he tried this was "Tastes like a funeral." That is, something that would traditionally appear at a dinner following one, or something. Not to say it is a bad thing- He liked it a lot. And so did I, so I give this a 5! Thanks for sharing!
