Ingredients Nutrition

  • 2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped into 1-inch pieces
  • 5 slices bacon, cut into small pieces (or one smoked ham hock)
  • salt, to taste
  • 12 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 13 cups water


  1. Combine ingredients in large saucepan.
  2. Cover and simmer for about 1 hour.

I would have like to use fresh beans, but unfortunately the one I had were not good anymore. So I had a bag of frozen green and yellow beans with baby carrots that I used. This recipe was perfect. The beans didn't taste like frozen like usually. I think I could have received family with this recipe without them noticing it was frozen beans. Who would have thought that stewed green beans could taste so good? Looking forward to trying this again with a ham hock.

A nice change for us with grean beans. So easy to throw together. I chose to brown the beacon after the cooking was done to top it off. The next time I would like to add onions to ours. Great meal.
