Ground Beef Curry (Kima Curry)

"This recipe is from one of my new favorite cookbooks, Extending the Table. The notes on this recipe say that this Swahili dish is served by a restaurant in the heart of Nairobi. I have only modified it to make the recipe fit into Zaar format, to preserve the authenticity of the recipe. This is a very mild, very easy to make curry."

  1. Very tasty! Made some subs for missing ingredients but still came out excellent.

Had to use a can of unsalted diced tomatoes since I didn't have whole and used a little ketchup instead of plain tomato paste.

I messed up part of the cooking instructions for the onions/beef (Forgot to put the oil first, whoops!) but it didn't seem to matter much. It's not a very spicy curry, which is perfect for me, since I'm kind of a spice-wimp. X3 but it's wonderful over some hot rice!

  2. I agree with everyone else's thoughts on the blandness. I quadrupled the curry, doubled the cinnamon, and added some hot pepper to spice it up. I served it with lime-cilantro rice and it was very good. Maybe the curry I had was just too bland - like some have suggested - curry paste may be a better option.

  3. simple and straight -forward, this dish had a delectable spiciness that had little to do with heat and more to do with depth of flavor. good weekday go to.

  4. Just what I was looking for. I doubled the meat and most spices, 4x the curry powder, added a few fresh hot peppers and fresh grated ginger. Also I used chick peas and carrots and 3 fresh tomatoes but didn't have paste. I also forgot to add the cilantro but no matter, everyone loved it! Fast and easy, thanks so much! A keeper for sure!

  5. This was good but with more spices added. It was bland as written. I doubled the cinnamon, added 1/2tsp of cardomom, fresh ginger with some powdered ginger, quite a bit of salt to taste and tripled the curry powder. It tasted wonderful with the Coconut Rice another poster recommended.

  2. This dish was easy to make but it was too mild for our taste. I used 1 tbsp of curry powder while cooking & then after I tasted it I added some cayenne pepper to it. I also used a 14oz can of diced tomatoes instead of fresh ones & added some chopped green peppers. Made for ZWT 4

  3. oooh is this yummy. i like a drier curry than one sopping in sauce and its so easy to put together. I subbed galangal for ginger and used Recipe #174350 as the curry powder. Its a keeper!

  4. Wonderful ground beef curry! We are wimpy when it comes to highly seasoned or "hot" foods but this was perfect for us. The bit of heat was not overwhelming and the flavors were so fresh and nice. I used ground chuck. ginger powder, and parsley instead of cilantro. There were only 2 tomatoes in the fridge so I used petite diced tomatoes and added some of the juice. Served with brown rice and there is a bit left that I will have for lunch tomorrow. So easy to make and tastes great! Made and reviewed for ZWT 4.

  5. Very good, mild curry. I used a 14 fl oz tin of diced tomatoes instead of fresh tomatoes as tomatoes were out of season.

I'm a stay at home mom with two lovely children, a wonderful husband, and 2 hungry roommates. I'm an artist by avocation, and am working to being one by vocation as well. * grins * Just to let everyone know, after a half hour discussion about it, the boys (DH and Roommate) have settled on ratings meanings. I reserve the right to bump up or down a half star a recipe based on the actual recipe and how easy it was, etc. etc. I have to admit, it's been a couple of years since I updated this text and in the meantime, my picky picky DD has flowered into a girl who enjoys California rolls, will give almost everything a try, and in general much less picky than the average 7 year old in this area. DS, at 2 and a half, asks for salad for lunch and then demolishes it. He's a weirdo. :) We try to be very honest and very descriptive with our reviews. And I fully appreciate the same from people reviewing my recipes. Not every family will like every recipe, and sometimes what you didn't like about a recipe, another family will love! :) I also try to be as nice and polite as possible in my reviews. I don't believe there is any reason not to. The only thing that really upsets me enough to be mean is when a poorly written recipe forces me to have to clean my kitchen. ***** - "Scout is not allowed to make this very often because it is highly addictive and will be inhaled on sight!" Dump Cakes, Sweet Salsa Chicken and Wasabi Peanuts are in this category. **** - "This is wonderful and we want to see it again fairly often, a new family favorite." *** - "This is good. We woud eat it again without any changes, but it's not our favorite." ** - "We did not like this very much, but we would eat it again if served it. It would be good if some changes were made. This was really not to our taste." * - "We would eat this again only with a lot of condiments to mask the taste." no stars - Means that I want to say something, but don't wish to post stars. This does not mean it is worse than a one star recipe!! :) I will only post public recipes that I have in fact cooked, and that my family has enjoyed - at least 3 stars on the above scale. All of my photos that I post on the forums are hosted on Flickr.
