My mom got this recipe from her mom. The bars are moist and spicy, and keep well. You can drizzle the bars with a powdered sugar glaze, but usually mom served them plain.

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease a 10x15-inch jellyroll pan and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, bring the raisins, water, sugar and shortening to a boil.
  4. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves and allow to cool.
  5. While the spice mixture is cooling, sift together the flour, salt and baking soda.
  6. Add to cooled mixture and stir well.
  7. Stir in chopped nuts and dates.
  8. Spread in prepared pan and bake for about 30 minutes.
  9. May be frosted, or very good left plain Makes 25 (2 x 3") bars.

I made these last night to have on hand for the holidays. I was very pleased with their taste and texture. They are a real comfort food. I loved the way the raisins soaked up the spice mixture in the hot liquid. It took a while for the hot mixture to cool, but it was worth the wait. I put a very light powdered sugar glaze on them while they were still a little warm. I will make these again. Delicious.
