This is a very forgiving recipe and is perfect for the beginner cook or those who have little cooking assistants.

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. Dump ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mix until well blended.
  3. Form walnut sized ball of dough and place 3 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  4. Use a small glass (or a child's palm) to flatten the cookie dough.
  5. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden.

I wanted to try anise cookies and these were so straightforward that I used this recipe to test them out. This is a great recipe, especially if you don't have much time or just want something fast and easy. Making these with kids would be a great learning experience (not to mention less mess than most recipes), but since I don't have any little ones at home anymore I had to do it alone. Although I like the recipe very much, I found that I am not a fan of anise. I don't know why I thought that I might be, since I hate licorice and the flavor is similar. I made these for a second time and, instead of anise, I used 1/2 tsp each of maple extract and vanilla extract and I subbed in brown sugar for the white. I also toasted about 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts and added them in and since I was low on butter in the house I used margarine because the other flavors were so strong that it didn't really matter much. This will actually become my play-around cookie while I try out different add-ins and flavorings.

I loved the taste of these cookies. My husband doesn't have a sweet tooth but loved them as well. The only complaint is that they are a little greasy from all the butter. The next time I try them, i'll try to make them low fat by reducing the butter and adding's worth a try! November 22, 2009
