From The Worldwide Gourmet, taste of Cyprus. Like all doughnuts these are more time comsuming than difficult. But like all doughnuts, they are SO worth the trouble. Puffy spicy rings of sticky goodness. What a lovely way to show a loved one you care...

  1. Make the syrup by combining the water, sugar and lemon juice;
  2. Cook over low heat for 3 minutes, remove from the heat and set aside.
  3. Combine the flour, 6 tablespoons olive oil, salt and water. Work the ingredients together to form a thick and workable dough.
  4. Roll the dough out into fairly thin strips, about 2.5 cm (1") wide and 10 cm (4") long. Seal the two ends of each strip together to form a ring.
  5. Fry the doughnuts in plenty of hot oil. Once they are golden brown, drain on paper towels.
  6. Dip the doughnuts into the syrup. Place on a serving platter and sprinkle with the ground almonds, cinnamon and cloves.
