My Nana always used to make this with Farmer's cheese which she would crumble in at the end. Give it a try. In my opinion a little cheese makes everything better!
I really liked this. My grandmother always made halushki, and so does my mom (for special occasions), and they are of a slovak background. This is the first time I have ever even HEARD of potatoes being in halushki, so I wanted to try it. I made it just as it said to, even with the yukon gold potatoes. The only thing I would do differently is to season the potatoes themselves right before mixing with the other ingredients. I wanted to halve the recipe, but couldn't think of what I'd do with the other half head of cabbage! Instead of halving it, I would suggest (and will try next time) reducing the amount of noodles. This really makes a lot. I love old-world style recipes. I enjoyed this.
Being from PA, melting pot of backgrounds that it is, I have enjoyed Halushki most of my life. The above recipe is about perfect. I jazz mine up w/a bit of soy sauce and also add some olive oil to the cabbage & onions once they have sauteed in the butter. Play with this recipe and make it your own. It's a terrific dish!
I was recently in the Czech Republic, and had Halushki a Slovak recipe. Try adding Goat Cheese to the top before serving. Also, I am sure there are different recipes, but the one I ate did not have cabbage.
