My aunt made this cake and shared the recipe with my Mom. I have made this cake and its nice and moist.

  1. Preheat oven to 350 deg F.
  2. Grease and lightly flour a 13 x 9 inch cake pan.
  3. Mix together sugars, eggs and shortening.
  4. Dissolve soda in buttermilk.
  5. Mix together the dry ingredients, adding to the sugar mix alternately with the buttermilk.
  6. After mixing the above well, fold in apples and pour into prepared cake pan.
  7. Mix topping and sprinkle over batter.
  8. Bake for 35- 45 minutes.

Delicious! Easy to make and very moist. I'll certainly make it again. I used 3 cups of apples and omitted the nutmeg and cloves since I'm not fond of them. It's a great recipe! One thing I noticed is the recipe for the cake has cinnamon listed twice. I used 1/2 tsp. but will use 1 tsp. next time.

This is an extraordinarily yummy, easy to make, scrumptious cake. I made it for a work breakfast tomorrow, and I've already had a "little" bit for myself. The spices are great, the texture is perfect, and the topping just makes it even better. Definitely a keeper that I'll make again!

After 35 years of marriage this was my first made from scratch cake, and it turned out wonderful. I had some apples that we picked off our tree in August and they were still good in my fridge, so I needed something to put them in and this was perfect. Only change I made was to put 3 cups instead of 2, and wasn't sure how big or small to chop the apples so I made them in between. Made the house smell incredible. Thanks so much for this great recipe, I will certainly make this again since it was so simple to do.
