Food Works Fried Apples

"Apple are delicious cooked, too! These fried apples are like apple pie filling (without the crust) and delicious served over oatmeal, quinoa, or ice cream! <br> PROTIP: Not all apples are good for cooking. Choose cortland, fuji, empire, or granny smith for best results. Others will go a bit mushy."

directions

  • Core apples and slice them thinly. Get ALL the core bits out. Peel them if you must, but all the nutrients are in there!
  • Sprinkle apples with lemon juice to stop them browning (from oxygen).
  • In a large skillet or frying pan, melt butter with oil on medium heat.
  • Carefully pour the apples in the skillet, and spread out evenly.
  • Sprinkle brown sugar over the apples.
  • Cover skillet and cook on medium, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft and the pan is full of juices.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon (and optional nutmeg) when they are finished. Cinnamon will soak up all the juices in the pan.
  • Serve hot over cereal or ice cream, or top with granola.
