Flo's Special Hot Dog Relish

"Flo's Hot Dogs, is located on Rte. 1 in the seacoast area of Maine, in Capeneddick. This little shack has "THE BEST" hot dogs in the world, and has been serving these hot dogs for years... Standing room only inside where the line goes out the door from the time they open, till the time they close... People order 5-6 hot dogs a piece, if that says anything!!! They serve their hot dogs with this sweet and slightly hot relish along with mustard, or with mayonnaise, or with "The Works" which is all three plus celery salt over the top. I have had the pleasure of eating a few of these dogs in my time, and all I can say is MMM m mmm MMMMMM M! The secret to these FABULOUS Hot Dogs is the relish or "sauce" as some call it...   • Put onions, and crushed red peppers in food processor or blender. Chop fine.
  • Put all ingredients in a big kettle, and heat until it gets hot, stirring as you go.
  • Simmer for 8 hours.
  • Put in glass jars, and store in fridge, or process in canning jars, following canning procedures.

  1. ok!!! i tryed this to the exact recipe shown, this is noway the same as flo's went and bought 3 jars and compared it absolutly not what i made here gross!!! threw it over the bank behind my house! anyway buy a jar save your money. if you look at the ingredients on the label you'll understand theres more to it.
     
  2. I modified the recipe: To serve a Flo's "House Special" dog - mayo, celery salt and Flo's relish! Prep: 5 mins Cook: 2 hrs Yields: Makes about 2 cups of relish Ingredients 1 pound yellow onions, chopped fine 1/2 cup molasses 2 tablespoons white vinegar 1/8 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce Directions 1 Add all ingredients to saucepan and heat until simmering, stirring occasionally, for about 2 hours, or you can continue cooking until desired consistency. NOTE 1 You will have to strain out most of the liquid (if you only cook 2 hrs) before putting on your hot dog. 2 To serve a Flo's "House Special" dog top with mayo, celery salt and Flo's relish!
     
  3. I made this sauce before I saw it here, so this is NO REFLECTION on the poster of this recipe. I cut the recipe by 75% because no way did I need that much sauce... Other wise I made it exactly as the recipe said... IMO, it was terrible, and I can't for the life of me figure out why people would ruin a good hot dog with this sauce.
     
  4. I was not sure that I would like this because I am not fond of molasses, but it sounded just interesting enough for me to try. I made the recipe using 4 ounces ground onions, 5 teaspoons molasses, 1 1/4 teaspoons white vinegar, 1 Tablespoon brown sugar, ½ teaspoon Sirachi Hot Sauce & 1 cup water. I cooked it in a 1-qt heavy saucepan, over low heat, covered, for approximately 2 hours, stirring often, uncovering it for the last half hour to allow it to thicken. I ended up with approximately 1 cup of delicious sauce. It is absolutely wonderful and has a complex flavor that really grows on you. I will make a larger recipe SOON. Thank you for this unusual recipe.
     
  5. OMG, this stuff is GREAT! I made a batch to see if it's like Flo's and it is EXACTLY the same. We often go to Flo's in Cape Neddick Maine, and indulge in her delicious dogs, but now I can make them at home and save on gas. I am so psyched! Thanks Linda!!!
