Favorite Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

I've tried a lot of buttercream frosting recipes and this one is the best. For decorating, I like to use the Wilton recipe, but for simple frosting, this one "takes the cake." Makes enough frosting for two 8-inch layers.

  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened to room temperature (don't melt it in the microwave)
  • 14 cup milk or 14 cup cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 (3 1/4 cup) box confectioners' sugar
  • 2 bittersweet chocolate squares (optional)

Directions

  1. Beat the butter, milk, vanilla and salt in a medium bowl.
  2. Slowly add the confectioners' sugar.
  3. Mix until thick and creamy.
  4. Beat on high until fluffy and of good spreading consistency.
  5. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler and drizzle over the iced cake.

came out a bit too sweet-- I think there should be more butter to the same amount of sugar-the vanilla taste is perfect-thanks!
