Favorite Chocolate Haupia Pie

Recipe by ChamoritaMomma

This pie brings back great memories of being stationed back in Hawaii. This was one of our favorite desserts. I'm so glad we don't have to be on the island to enjoy this great dessert.

Ever since we took a trip to visit Hawaii, my husband has missed all the delicious foods he tried out there for the first time. When I saw this recipe, I knew I had to try to make it for him (even if I'm such a beginner at cooking). I had to fudge a few bits, like not having bought chocolate chips, I settled for broken down hershey bar and nugget pieces. Because of my guesstimating how much of the chocolate to use instead of having the pre-measured chips, the chocolate side of the pie wasn't as firm as the rest, but apart from that, the recipe was incredibly delicious and just what my husband remembered his first time eating haupia. This is a very simple recipe made even easier since I was able to find a ready-made pie crust in the stores. Thanks for such a delicious dessert and I encourage anyone who likes a coconut flavor in their pie to definitely try this.

Ingredients Nutrition

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake crust for 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Set aside to cool. In a medium saucepan, whisk together milk, coconut milk and 1 cup sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in water. Bring coconut mixture to a boil. Reduce to simmer and slowly whisk in the cornstarch.
  3. Continue stirring mixture over low heat until thickened.
  4. In a small sauce pan, melt chocolate chips for 1 minute or until melted. Reserve 1/2 of the coconut mixture. Mix remaining half with the melted chocolate and pour in bottom of pie crust; pour reserved half on top of chocolate layer. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour.
  5. Whip cream with 1/4 cup sugar until stiff peaks form. Layer the cream on pie; if desired garnish with chocolate shavings. Best if it refrigerates over night to completely firm.
