This liquid soap can be used in the bath as well as a hand wash. For antibacterial purposes use tea tree oil, lemon and/or lavender. Other wonderful scents are jasmine, rose and lemongrass.

I had some leftover soap (Ivory I think) from the kids' attempts at soap carving! I wasn't sure how much soap I had, so I used 3 cups of water and combined the water and grated soap in a saucepot and cooked on low until most of the soap was disintegrated. Then I added the 3 T glycerine and 1 tsp of peppermint oil. It smells so lovely! I then strained it into a quart canning jar (just barely fits) to cool. I poured a little of it (didn't really let it stand for 12 hours :) into my child's humidifier to clean it. It bubbled up nicely. It's not a thick soap, so I'll have to see how it works in a pump dispenser, but if so, it's a cheap way to have liquid hand soap. And it's not the "antibacterial free" kind that I'm avoiding now.

Ingredients Nutrition

  • 2 -2 12 teaspoons essential oils, of your choice
  • 2 pints hot water
  • 1 soap bar (grated or flaked, Ivory or homemade soaps are best)
  • 3 tablespoons glycerine

  1. Mix all the ingredients together.
  2. Leave to stand for 12 hours and store in a suitable container.
  3. (If you want to tweak this to your liking, remember that you should use about 10 drops of oil per ounce of soap.).
