    Linky's Note:

When I was little, my German mom would serve this delicious one-pot dish. She called it Eier Schuh which translates to: Eggs Shoe. Makes no sense, right? Well, when she was a little girl in Ostfriesland, Germany, her brother had a penpal in England who described Irish Stew to him. This is how my Grandmother interpreted the ingredients. My mom misunderstood the pronunciation and "Irish Stew" sounds kind of like "Eier Schuh" . It doesn't seem like any Irish Stew I've ever seen, but it is easy, cheap and yummy! Amounts of ingredients are approximate - suit yourself!

This is a very nice stew and it is very easy to make in a slowcooker. We love cabbage and potatoes so you can't go wrong in my book. There is no end to what type of seasonings you can add so next time I might add a little "kick" to the dish. Will definitely make this again. Made for AUS/NZ Tag, January, 2012.

Well, regardless of the origins, your Grandmother got the translation just right!! This is just wonderful comfort food. I made this in my crock-pot so I wasn't sure if I would end up with soup or stew. Stew won! I browned the ground beef with 1/2 large onion, and then made the layers in the crockpot as written. I added about 2 cups of liquid, including the drippings from browning the beef. I included about 1-1 1/2 teaspoons of Sea Salt Seasoning ~ I seasoned each layer as I put it in the crock. This cooked for 6 hours on low and has a fabulous flavor. Thanks for posting Linky, this is really quick and easy and quite good. Glad I tried it in the crock-pot. Made for Spring PAC 2010!
