Who was it that said that eternity is two people and a ham? I've made great inroads on that New year's ham, but still had some left and came across this recipe. I did not use the bacon, sauteed the onions in a bit of butter, did not use the corn (Mr Grumpy is opposed to corn), added additional potatoes, some finely chopped celery and sliced carrots to compensate. Used less cheese, but used sharp cheddar. This as a very delicious soup on a cold day. Half the recipe left just a few spoonfuls in the pot, but we like large portions of soup.
Far and away the very best ham chowder I have ever had!! I added extra potatoes to help extend the recipe a bit, and we thinned it down a little but other than that it was perfect. Will become a go to meal for us. My 22 year old daughter asked for Ham Chowder for her birthday dinner "like you used to make when I was little". Don't have that recipe anymore, but have found a fantastic replacement!! This is a keeper, a very delicious keeper.
OK, I rarely follow a recipe. And I did, with this one. Until the very end. I have an in-home daycare, and all hell broke loose at pick up time. I forgot to add the cheese and DH served the chowder. Loose the cheese, it is so not needed! We loved it without it!!!
What a fantastic dish! The family absolutely devoured it. I added about 1 cup of carrots (I had 3 sitting in my vegetable drawer!) but other then that, I followed the recipe exactly. Thanks so much for posting! We're hanging on to this recipe!!!!
This dish has quickly beconme a family favorite. My family always asks for this! I also use the ham broth idea but still use some bacon. Thank you for this recipe!
This is a super tasty chowder. I made this in April, sorry I forgot to review it until now. I used a mix of low-fat cheddar, regular cheddar, and swiss (I have recently discovered the wondrous melting abilities of swiss). Left out the onion and the corn. I think I'll be making this often next winter.
