Dried Liver Treats

"Your dog is going to love these. Probably your cat, too It will keep all day while you carry it around in your pocket. When the liver is dried it can be stored in the fridge for about a week or in the freezer for about 3 months (in a sealed container)."

Questions & Replies

  1. The liver is simmering as I write. I realized I forgot to rinse liver first. Will that be problem? It's been simmering for 20 minutes. Liver purchased in supermarket in fresh meat aisle. Thanks. Eileen in New Jersey USA

Reviews

  1. Simple, cheap and delicious. Been making this for my Old English since he was a puppy. Works with other meats as well, heart, kidney etc. Everytime I make them, they seem to turn out different though, but dog loves them each way

  2. Seems to be a lot of controversy over the garlic. Dr. Dressler, in his book, Dog Cancer Survival Guide, includes a home cooked recipe that includes a small amount of garlic. Garlic is known to have cancer fighting properties. However, unless you are giving this as a therapeutic for cancer treatment I believe it would be best to avoid the garlic. Why take the risk? If the dogs don't like the treats without garlic then don't feed them it at all. Mine love it without garlic [but they would eat the legs off my chairs if I key them. ] also, never give garlic to puppies less than 6 months.

  3. GARLic is really bad for dogs. Bad recipe.

  4. FYI, garlic is also bad for dogs.

  5. Dogs love liver treats and I use them as a high value reward. Liver should be limited though when treating or feeding your dog. Garlic is an Allium and is a toxin to dogs & cats. There’s no benefit in giving your dog Garlic or a toxin even in small amounts. This liver recipe is perfectly delicious without the Garlic so WHY add it & risk your pet’s health?

Tweaks

  1. Garlic is toxic to both dogs and cats! As little as one clove can cause toxicosis, and causes red blood cell death. Do not add it to your dog treat recipes!!

  2. I usually have to cook it longer to get it dry enough. I also save the water and freeze it for treats outside on warm days.

  3. Placed cooked liver into fridge for a short time to hasten cool-down and drying out making it easier to cut even pieces.
