Use the best Southern whiskey you can afford.
- Boil water and sugar together with two bunches of torn mint leaves in large pot until sugar dissolves completely. Cool. Strain sugar syrup to remove mint leaves.
- Combine cooled sugar syrup and bottle of whiskey. Stuff remaining mint leaves into empty whiskey bottle and refill bottle with whiskey and syrup mixture.
- Cap and put in freezer over night. It will freeze to a slushy consistency for serving.
- Serve in chilled silver julep cups or other chilled glasses straight from frozen bottle and garnish each glass with mint sprig.
